Check F11 setting. "The shutter will not release and it will not record." Otherwise, I'll be going to Kyrgyzstan with my LX-3 if I can pry it from the hands of my ex-wife (she got it in the divorce). Luckily, I had a trip planned to Manhattan next week anyways, so I'll see if the guys at B&H might be able to have a look and give me some advice/fix it. It is looking like I will be out of luck with getting it back on any service repair from Nikon in time for my trip. Formatting with a PC (not hopeful about this) Reinstalling firmwear (don't have the cord with me and traveling) Of course, I've tried the in-camera format (I actually do this every time I download a card). I tried reformatting on the Mac in the suggested forma, and no luck. I'm using SanDisk cards, and I've tried a new one. I took it to a pro shop in Austin and they bent it back for me for free - I've examined it and it still seems fine - looks straight - but this could be the issue. About six months ago, I did have a slightly bent pin. Even though none of them seem to be out of line or 'touching', he did pick up on something. Here is what I have tried.įirst, as Homer suggested, I checked the pins. So if all else fails, you might want to try that. ![]() This will reset the camera processing system and force it back into known states. The manuals suggest, in that case, to turn the camera off, take out the batteries, let the camera sit w/o the batteris for about 15 minutes, then reinstall the batteries and try again. Sometimes an modern electronic camera can get a zap of interference from somewhere, and it will start acting weird. In that case, follow Elliot's advice and contact Nikon tech support, or send the camera to an authorized Nikon Service center. If the camera is unable to do a format on a brand new card (assuming you have the correct type card), then the problem is the camera. Or use a card that you know (beyond a doubt) is good. If you are still unable to format either of those cards in the camera, using these simple instructions, then buy a brand new card, see if the camera will complete a format on it. In my opinion, you should format the card only in the camera, not on the computer. Or, you can do a format by acessing the function through the camera's system menu. The LCD data screen then shows you an estimated (not precise) number of picture capacity left on the card. The format runs through, and, if all goes well, completes within a few seconds. Then, when you see the flashing letters FOR on the LCD, you give them a 2nd simultaneous push to start the format. If your d700 is like the d300, activating a re-format is as simple as pressing and holding in the two camera buttons marked FORMAT. Of course you know that once you re-format that card, you lose access to any existing picture files unless you have special file-recovery software. If there are no picture files on the cards that you need to copy off, then its safe to try a re-format in the camera.
